Central to social psychological approaches to explaining intergroup conflict and tension is that people categorize their social worlds into ‘ingroups’ and ‘outgroups’, i.e. into ‘us’ and ‘them’.

Such social categorization and identification processes are central to intergroup phenomena and form the basis for a range of intergroup processes that perpetuate conflict.

Our research builds on two well-known approaches to conflict resolution:

  • perspective taking
  •  intergroup contact

We’ve recruited participants who has strong opinions regarding taking flights and their impact on climate change. Using the ‘body swapping’ technique in VR, they embodied two different perspectives represented by the posters in the background.

This work was presented as a poster in the 2024 Social XR Spring School in CWI Amsterdam.
